On the history of the pedigree - the name "Meining"

On the history of the pedigree - from the notes of Mr. Anton O. Meining, Freiburg (March 1985)

The earliest records of the name Meining hitherto (year 1579) can be found in the parish registers of Wenkheim (today part of the commune Werbach). Consecutive records (not always complete) are available from the year 1621.

Between both record strands a kinsmanslike but no consecutive connection can be found.

Consecutive records, that were undertaken only from the end of the 30 years war, are unfortunately not always complete. Earlier entries treat mainly marriage and inheritance contracts and not birth and death cases (some records are maybe be lost due to war turmoil). Private notes in bibles and prayer-books were not investigated.

Sources :

The pedigree contains consecutive records of all registered persons from the years 1579 and 1621, respectively.
Missing data until 1875 are not recorded. It is likely, that family members before 1875 are missing, because they could not be found in the records or they could not be traced through private surveys.

I ask the reader to report such missing persons and data, that have to be added, if possible. They can easily be incorporated.

Holders of the name in the former German Democratic Republic as well as their descendants and relatives (who now partly live in the Federal Republic of Germany), could not tell me references on former relatives (2 generations back at most), so that it is not possible to trace connections between their and our pedigree, yet.
The age of our pedigree as well as the long term residence in the same landscape - in Wenkheim for more than 250 years - let's one assume, that migration from here and settlements of wandering craftsmen formed new centres in other areas. A more detailed study is for political reasons not possible yet. Migrations of citizens are not registered in the old parish and marriage registers.

On the name "Meining" (by Anton O. Meining)

The family name MEINING arises from the old High German terms "magan" and "megin", which mean "mögen" (to like), "vermögen" (to be capable of) = können (to can), Stärke (strength), Kraft (force), Macht (power) (according to books of the German family research). The end syllable "ing" means clan, tribe. An holder of the name Meining ("magining" -"megining", the first g disappeared with time) is therefore member of the clan of able people.

Responsible

These pages were written by Winfried Meining, Stockholm (e-mail : winfried@meining.org, http://www.meining.org). However, the actual work was done by Mr. Anton O. Meining, Freiburg, without whom this pedigree would not exist. While Mr. Anton O. Meining certainly collected the data with maximum possible carefulness and also I myself tried to correctly transfer the data into an electronic format, both Mr. Meining and I cannot guarantee the correctness of the data. At this place I'd like to thank Mr. Anton Meining to allow me to publish the pedigree data in this form.

The relationship between Winfried and Mr. Anton Meining can in principle easily be explained :

Winfried is the last son of Hermann Meining, who was son of Michael, who was son of Johann Adam. Johann Adam's father Anton was the son of Franciscus, who was son of Bartholomäus. This Bartholomäus was one of the sons of Johannes Christophorus Meining, who lived from 1694 until at least 1732, the year when his last son Franciscus was born. Franciscus had a son named Martinus, who himself had a son Joannes, who was father of Johann Georg. Johann Georg had a son named Bartholomäus, who had a son himself named Anton Franz, who was the father of Anton O. Meining, the author of this pedigree.

Simple, isn't it ? ;-)
